Spring Newsletter 2026

March 1, 2026

There’s nothing like snow, ice and blustery winter wind to get us all searching for signs of spring. Look no further than the library! Whether it’s learning about new gardening techniques from books and videos, swapping plants and seeds with fellow garden fans, or pitching in to ready a perennial garden, the library is ready to scratch that gardening itch. The Friends of Augusta County Library Foundation (FACLF) also supports a host of gardening programs – and it subsidizes programs supporting community members of all ages. Whether it’s crafting, getting  tech help or attending meetups for fans of manja, board games, Legos and local history, FACLF  funds programs where visitors can spend an enjoyable few hours and make new friends. Thank you for your generosity in supporting FACFL’s work. Read on for more news from your library Friends.

In this issue:

Friends in New Places

In December 2025, Augusta County Library announced the appointment of Natalie Hutchinson as its new Library Director, replacing Dr. Jennifer Brown who was recently named Executive Director of the Virginia Library Association.

Hutchinson comes to us from Prince William County Public Libraries in Northern Virginia, where she enhanced services, strengthened staff capacity, and deepened community engagement. Her professional background includes branch management, system-level program development, grant leadership, and cross-department collaboration – with a consistent emphasis on expanding access and equity for both staff and patrons.

“The Library Board is excited to welcome Natalie Hutchinson as our new director,” said Susan Thacker, Chair of the Augusta County Library Board. “Her experience, collaborative leadership style, and future-forward perspective position her well to guide the library’s continued growth and service to the community.”

“I am honored to join Augusta County Library and work alongside such a dedicated staff and engaged community,” said Hutchinson. “Libraries play a vital role in connecting people to information, opportunity, and one another, and I look forward to collaborating with staff and residents to continue building services that are welcoming and responsive to the community’s needs.”

Former director, Dr. Jennifer Brown has joined the board of the Friends of the Augusta County Library Foundation as its treasurer. She fills the seat held by Oakley Pearson who retired in December.

Oakley Pearson has a long and dedicated history with the Augusta County Library. In 1989 he was the director of the Talking Book Center, the free service distributing recorded books and magazines for those with visual and physical disabilities, forging a partnership between the TBC and the Friends in 1990. Pearson was instrumental in the 1990s in arranging speakers for fundraising and membership drives for the Friends, and eventually took over managing the Friends’ finances in 2014, keeping the books, producing quarterly reports, filing the required nonprofit federal and state reports, and making weekly visits to Fishersville to write the checks.

“I am a firm believer that libraries and access to reading materials in a variety of forms are basic to our democracy and that reading is crucial to the development of our children and youth,” Pearson said. "The creation, telling, and transmission of stories, in whatever medium, is what defines us as human. It has been my honor and pleasure for the last 35 years to be part of an organization that promotes, amplifies, and sustains our public libraries.”

We thank Oakley for his long commitment and dedicated service to the library community and wish him the best in retirement.

Lucy the Dinosaur Gets Her Own Book

We have some exciting news! Lucy the dinosaur, the mascot of the Fishersville Library will be getting her own book. Some creative folks from the Augusta County Library are in the process of writing a children’s book, and ACL employee Beth is providing illustrations.  Stay tuned for more details!

New Cataloging System

The Augusta County Library is in the process of switching from the Dewey Decimal System to BROWSER, a more user-friendly classification system. Rather than assigning numbers to the spines of books, BROWSER uses intuitive categories and plain language subject headings, so that readers can find similar books together.

Much the way bookstores organize their items, the libraries will shelve nonfiction books by general category (young adult, for example), then by subcategory (nature) then by author’s last name. As before, fiction will still be shelved by the author’s last name. Look for the changes rolling out first at the Fishersville Library.

Spring is On the Way

We’re already seeing signs of spring: robins, snow drops, seed catalogs and even some crocuses and daffodils peeking up from the ground.  In March, gardeners’ thoughts turn to clearing out flower beds and getting ready for spring and summer.

If you’ve got a green thumb, or just want to learn more about gardening, the library has what you need. Besides shelves of books on raising plants, here are three ways you can exercise your green thumb:

Gardening Workshops

Join the Central Shenandoah Valley Master Gardeners Association for their monthly gardening workshop at the Fishersville library! The series occurs on the 1st Tuesday of every month @ 5:30 - 6:30 pm, and covers a variety of gardening topics and workshops. Registration required.

  • Tuesday, March 3 - Teas From the Garden
  • Tuesday, April 7 -  Creative Containers
  • Tuesday, May 5 - Veggie Gardening Basics
  • Tuesday, June 2 - Beneficial Insects

Plant Swaps

Second, join our plant swaps – a fun way to get rid of any extra plants you may have (perennial divisions, extra seedlings, pack annuals, unwanted houseplants, etc.) by trading with other gardeners. Bring your extra plants or seeds to the Stuarts Draft library and meet others who can appreciate your favorite garden varieties.

  • Friday, April 24, 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm at Stuarts Draft

Hands-on Experience

Last but not least, you can get some hands-on gardening experience by joining the Friends as they prepare the always stunning and much appreciated perennial beds around the Fishersville Library. For more information, contact friends@augustacountylibrary.org

What We're Reading: Epistolary novels

What could be more intriguing than cozying up with a book filled with someone else’s letters? Epistolary novels tell their stories through documents, letters, diary entries, or emails, giving readers an intimate and seemingly authentic view of the letter writers as the story unfolds.

The Correspondent, by Virginia Evans

The 2025 best seller tells the story of a woman of powerful intellect and expression through her thoughtful and carefully composed letters. Now in her 70s, Sybil Van Antwerp sits at her desk with her pen and stationery as she writes to a wide range of people, including her brother Felix, her best friend, neighbors, the president of the local university, and authors like Joan Didion and Larry McMurtry. In the process, she gradually reveals her prickly but graceful character. Through her letters, readers see her come to terms with a painful past, navigate the physical and emotional changes inevitable with aging and summon the courage and grit to take on some new adventures. .

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

This 2008 epistolary novel is told through letters exchanged between fictional writer Juliet Ashton and the residents of Guernsey – one of the British islands in the English Channel – who formed a book club during the German occupation in World War II. As Juliet and her pen pals exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into friendships with a pig farmer, a former valet, a phrenologist and other characters as she learns to love the scenic island and its eccentric inhabitants.

An American Marriage, by Tayari Jones

The lives of newlyweds Celestial and Roy are upended when Roy is wrongly convicted of a crime and sentenced to 12 years in prison. Told in part through letters, the story follows the couple as they try to sustain their disintegrating relationship under the strain of Roy’s incarceration.

Dear Committee Members, by Julie Schumacher

This 2014 novel is told through hilarious letters of recommendation written for students by Payne University's literature and creative writing Professor Jason Fitger. His love life is a mess as a result of using his private affairs as fodder for his novels, and his career has stalled in a department of increasing irrelevance. Fitger's challenges and wit are showcased through the often passive-aggressive recommendations he sends to colleagues and friends for his students -- some of whom he truly believes in. An academic satire, the novel shows the poignant side of a man who loves literature and fine writing, but must come to terms with his failure to realize his own dreams.
